Linux 2: History


  • Multics Project on GE 645 by GE and MIT, Bell joined later in 1965
  • Bell labs left in 1969
  • Ken Thompson with Dennis Ritchie developed Unics (UNIX) for PDP-7 (opposed to Multics)
  • Unix written in Assembler and B
  • Dennis Ritchie developed B into C
  • When 1973 most of UNIX were C

  • In 70's Court ordered AT&T not to sell S/Ws
  • AT&T gave away UNIX to universities
  • Berkeley University released BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) version of UNIX
  • BSD went to commercial market
  • System V and BSD1 aroused

  • In 1984 AT&T allowed to sell UNIX
  • Released System 3 followed by System V (up to release 4 (SVR4))
