A380 Landings at Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayaka, Colombo

Colombo, Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) has only been able to accommodate regular 747-400 aircraft operation as the maximum capacity. But since the emergency landing requirements of the world's largest passenger aircraft Airbus A380-800 fits the airport's runway specification, the airport has seen several emergency landings past few years.

In 2017 Jan-Apr period, the authorities have upgraded the runway up to a certain level making A380 landing more possible. But still, it doesn't meet the minimum requirements to hold A380 landings regularly with scheduled flights. Class F runway is needed, yet the runway isn't certified as Class F since the core of the runway is still only 45 m wide, not 60m wide as per the requirement. The runway is measured 60 m wide including shoulders.

There has been a scheduled one-off flight coordinated with Emirates Airlines to celebrate the upgrade of the runway.

Note: (No. 9) This flight had the original route of CHC-SYD-DXB of flight number EK413. The flight started with A6-EUF from Christchurch (CHC). But for some reason, the flight has been discontinued at Sydney (SYD) and changed the aircraft to A6-EEQ. In the meanwhile, there has been a flight bearing flight number EK413 from Melbourne (MEL) to SYD. Anyway, the A6-EEQ took over from SYD and headed toward Dubai (DXB) with a stopover at Colombo (CMB) for refuelling.
